The Mayor of Wells

The Mayor & Mayoress of Wells - Cllr and Mrs John North
On the 20th May 2017 Cllr North was elected 644th Mayor of Wells, his wife Gail North will be his Mayoress.
The Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Celia Wride and the the Mayor's Chaplain will be Alistair Glanvile who is also a reader at St Cuthbert's Church, Wells.

Cllr North has lived in Wells for the last twenty-six years with his wife Gail and their Siamese cats. "We both love Wells and could not think of a better place to live. This year, as well as being Mayor and Mayoress, we will celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary; so it looks like it’s going to be a very busy year indeed."

John was first elected to Wells City Council in 2007 and has during that time worked with other councillors on road safety and zebra crossings, supported Wells independent retailers and worked with the people of Wells to ensure England’s smallest City is the jewel in Somerset’s eye.

He has also:

  • chaired both the Finance and Archives committees
  • been a member of Planning, City Centre & Open Spaces and Tourism committees
  • chaired the “Bishops Barn & Recreation Ground Trust” for the last five years before handing over to a fellow trustee. During this time a destination play area has been delivered and it’s great to see how many families are enjoying this great play area.
  • been a District Councillor since 2011

Cllr North says - "It is a great honour and privilege to be elected Mayor of Wells. I look forward to working hard on behalf of the City and to do my very best to meet the City’s expectations of its 644th Mayor."
