Len Sweales was appointed the Wells Town Crier in 2001 after the sudden death of Les Long in November 2000.

During his time as Town Crier Len has met numerous celebrities and famous people. In 2002 he met Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh when they visited Wells as part of their Golden Jubilee. He has also met the cast and crew of 'Hot Fuzz' including Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Richard E Grant & Rory Bremner (pictured) to name but a few.

Len has taken part in many Town Crier competitions, he won 'The Championship' in Mells in 2006 & 2008.  Added to this he has also won best 'Cry Content' and 'Best Dressed Crier'

For many years Len has played various roles with the Wells Little Theatre including The Dame in local panto productions.

Len's career in The London Fire Brigade spanned over thirty years, he retired in 1997 in the rank of Divisional Officer, and moved to Wells from Camberley, Surrey in October 2000.

Len married Rosemary in 1969 and together they have two children Emma and Sarah. Len and Rosemary have 3 grandchildren called Harrison, Cameron and Aimee.

The history of the Town Crier's uniform:
“The bellman is often noticed in the city records. In 1662 there is a record of the delivery of the bell to the bellman. Besides his wages he was to have “a good green great coat” and a hat. … It may be added here that green was a favourite colour with our old corporators. The Serjeants-at-Mace always had green robes. This was altered a few years ago, but change is the fashion and rage of modern times.”
