Have your say on proposed parking and traffic schemes in Wells
Wells City Council is inviting residents, businesses and other interested parties to have their say on proposed changes to speed limits, parking and traffic arrangements across the city.
The four-week consultation, open until Wednesday 11th November, gives you the opportunity to view the proposals and share your views before they are considered by Wells Full Council.
No decisions have been made on the proposals at this stage.
What is being proposed?
The proposals include changes to speed limits, parking provision and the use of loading bays across Wells.
Proposed 20mph speed limits
The consultation includes proposals to introduce 20mph speed limits on:
- Wookey Hole Road
- Ash Lane
- Kennion Road
- Milton Lane
The proposed changes are intended to provide a lower-speed environment around local schools and respond to identified pedestrian safety concerns, particularly for children travelling to and from school.
There are also proposals to bring the speed limit around Blake Road and Welsford Avenue in line with other residential areas across the city. The area currently has a higher speed limit than surrounding residential streets.
Proposed parking changes
The consultation also includes proposed changes to parking bays and restrictions across the city.
These include:
- Increasing the overall number of disabled parking spaces
- Changes to existing parking bays and restrictions
- Managing the use of loading bays
- A wider programme of potential works
The proposed changes form one phase of a wider programme of potential works.
Other areas of Wells may be considered in future phases, with any further changes looked at on a case-by-case basis.
Have your say
Residents, businesses and other interested parties are encouraged to view the proposals and share their views as part of the four-week consultation.
The consultation runs through October and November 2026.

You can use the questionnaire to indicate whether you support, object to or have comments or concerns about the proposals.
Your feedback will help inform the Council's consideration of the proposed scheme.
What happens next?
Feedback received during the consultation will be considered before the proposals are presented to Wells Full Council on 26 November 2026. Wells City Council's response and recommendation will then be submitted to Somerset Council for consideration.
Subject to the outcome of that process, any approved changes could then be implemented over the winter period.
Please note
No decisions have been made on the proposals at this stage. The consultation is an opportunity for residents, businesses and other interested parties to share their views before the proposals are considered by Wells City Council and subsequently fed back to Somerset Council.
Please submit your views through the consultation questionnaire so that they can be formally considered as part of the consultation. Comments or responses made elsewhere, including on social media, will not be treated as formal consultation responses.
If you have any questions about the consultation or the proposed changes, please contact Wells City Council.
