Wells On Wheels

On this page:

On Saturday the 18th of June Wells City Council is teaming up with the Sustainable Wells Group to deliver the next Wells Goes Green event - Wells on Wheels! This event will be focussing on sustainable travel in Wells, with an extra-special focus on cycling!
According to IMPACT community carbon calculator, transport is the third-largest contributor to Wells’ carbon footprint. Reducing the number of cars used for short journeys in Wells is a key step to becoming a Carbon Neutral City by 2030.

The event will be held on the Recreation Grounds in Wells, by the band-stand, from 10:30am to 2:30pm, everyone is welcome to stop by and say hello!

    Who will be there?
Eco Move, Bristol will be attending with some electric bikes for you to try; Grand Tor Cycling will be on hand to demonstrate simple bike maintenance and repairs; LifeCycle will have literature and information on their schemes and financial aid; Local Councillors will be on hand at the Troubleshooting stand to discuss areas in Wells you believe need attention to improve safety and infrastructure for cycling and there will be an ice cream bike for refreshment (whether permitting); and more! Sustainable Wells are also organising a petition which will be sent to Somerset Highways asking for better cycling facilities in Wells and across the wider Somerset region.

A major focus of the event will be Wells’ first mass cycle through the city starting at 12 o’clock (noon)! We invite everyone who owns a bike to join us in this mass cycle to demonstrate our community’s passion for sustainable development and promote cycling throughout the city! This cycle will also highlight our desire for better infrastructure in Wells and the surrounding areas to increase the cycling population. Cyclists will follow the mass cycle leader on a short ride around the city (roughly 20-30 minutes’ duration) setting off from and returning to the Recreation Ground. Those who wish to participate can sign-up at the troubleshooting stand. Please see our guide to riders here

Whether you are a keen cyclist or a complete novice, your participation will be welcome. Children with parents or a responsible adult if under 12 will be especially welcome.  There will even be the chance to get an ice-cream from the ice cream bike (weather permitting)! Wherever you are on your sustainability journey, come along and get some great tips/ advice on sustainable travel in/ around Wells!
