Whether you’re a newcomer to music or you know your stuff, Make Music Day is an open invitation to perform, as long as it’s on 21st June and it’s free to view.
In Wells we have a programme of events throughout the day. Established venues such as Wells Cathedral and the Cathedral School’s Quilter Hall along with our city’s new community hub in the Portway Annexe will be hosting public events, with private events happening in our schools. Buskers will no doubt be out in force too.
Events in Chamberlain Hall at the Portway Annexe are being organised by the new Wells Contemporary Music Centre, with support of the Wells Rocks team. Participatory events will be happening during the day, with performances by local artists from 4PM, running into the evening. The local alternative folk duo, The Portraits will use the show as a warm up for their Glastonbury gig and Rick Payne and Cliff Thorne will close it with a blues set. Make Music Day is the UK’s largest single-day music event and, since it began as Fête de la musique in France in 1982, has become the world’s largest celebration of music taking place in 125 countries each year on 21st June. It’s an inclusive DIY festival encouraging musicians, producers, promoters and music lovers to collaborate, and to organise in-person and online music performances in their communities.
