    Mayor's Diary 22/03/2022

    Mayors Diary 22/03/2022

On Sunday 420 lawyers descended on Wells for the annual Legal Service in the Cathedral.

There they witness the appointment of the new High Sheriff of Somerset, in this case Jennifer Duke has replaced Thomas Sheppard, who the Mayor had taken on a tour of Wells last year.

The High Sheriff was once responsible for law and order in the county but the role is largely ceremonial now.

It is the second oldest office of state in England, after the monarch, with the first recorded High Sheriff of Somerset holding office in 1061.

The Town Crier led the procession of city councillors, Mace Bearers, Mayor and Mayoress into the cathedral through the Great West Door which was flanked by police horses.
