Wells City Council seeks new Serjeant-at-Mace

Wells City Council is inviting applications for a new Council’s Serjeant-at-Mace to help support civic events, official functions and Council meetings throughout the year.

The Serjeant-at-Mace plays an important role in Wells’ civic traditions, supporting the Civic Party and working alongside the Town Clerk to help ensure official occasions run smoothly.

The Council has two Serjeants-at-Mace, appointed by the Mayor. The Mayor’s Serjeant provides personal assistance to the Mayor, while the Council’s Serjeant supports the wider Civic Party and Council. The Council’s Serjeant also deputises for the Mayor’s Serjeant when required.

The title Serjeant-at-Mace uses the traditional spelling with a ‘J’, rather than the more modern ‘Sergeant’, reflecting the historic nature of this ceremonial role.

    What does the role involve?

The Council’s Serjeant-at-Mace attends a range of civic occasions, including Church services, Royal visits and other ceremonial events. Responsibilities include accompanying the Council’s civic procession, welcoming official guests, assisting with event arrangements and taking responsibility for the safe-keeping of the Council’s Mace.

The role also involves attending six Council meetings each year, currently held on Thursday evenings. The Serjeant-at-Mace on duty carries the Mace into the Council Chamber and announces the Mayor’s arrival, directs visitors to their seats and distributes papers as required by the Mayor and Town Clerk.

Civic events usually take place at weekends, although some additional events may be held during the week or in the evening. Punctuality and confidentiality are essential requirements for this post.

This is a voluntary position with a small expenses allowance. Appropriate ceremonial clothing, including gowns, white gloves and hats, is provided by the Council.

    How to apply

Anyone interested in the role who would like to find out more can contact Colin Price, the Mayor’s Serjeant-at-Mace, on 07748 221575.

To register interest in the role, please submit a one-page letter to the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Denise Denis, explaining suitability for the role and outlining any relevant previous experience.

Applications can be sent by email to townclerk@wells.gov.uk or by post to:

    • The Town Clerk
    • Wells City Council
    • Town Hall
    • Market Place
    • Wells
    • Somerset
    • BA5 2RB

The closing date for applications is 14th November 2026.
