Wells residents invited to have their say on proposed parking and traffic schemes

Wells City Council is inviting residents, businesses and other interested parties to have their say on proposed changes to highways, parking and traffic arrangements across the city, as part of a four-week consultation.

The Council has been working with Accessible Wells and Somerset Council to develop the proposed scheme, which includes changes to speed limits, parking provision and the use of loading bays.

The proposals include introducing 20mph speed limits on Wookey Hole Road, Ash Lane, Kennion Road and Milton Lane. The changes are intended to provide a lower-speed environment around local schools and respond to identified pedestrian safety concerns, particularly for children travelling to and from school.

The proposals would also bring the speed limit around Blake Road and Welsford Avenue in line with other residential areas across the city. The area currently has a higher speed limit than surrounding residential streets.

Alongside the proposed 20mph speed limits, the consultation includes changes to parking bays and restrictions across the city. These include proposals to increase the overall number of disabled parking spaces and manage the use of loading bays.

The proposed changes form one phase of a wider programme of potential works. Other areas of Wells may be considered in future phases, with any further changes looked at on a case-by-case basis.

Residents, businesses and other interested parties can view the proposals and submit their views during the four-week consultation, which runs from Wednesday 14th October to Wednesday 11th November 2026.

Feedback received during the consultation will be considered before the proposals are presented to Wells Full Council on 26th November 2026. Wells City Council's response and recommendation will then be submitted to Somerset Council for consideration.

Subject to the outcome of that process, any approved changes could then be implemented over the winter period.
