    Mayor's Diary 18-04-2022

    Mayors Diary 18-04-2022

A talk by Dave Mann from CHARIS (Christian Help and Action for Refugees in Somerset) attracted a large audience at the Connect Centre in Wells.

Most of this charity’s experience is based on resettling refugee families from Syria and Afghanistan, said Mr Mann.

There were fundamental differences between the situation in Ukraine and the refugees fleeing war on a temporary basis and seeking shelter in the UK, and the permanent resettlement of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan. There are also many similarities and CHARIS can offer experienced guidance and support for hosts as well as for Ukrainians seeking sanctuary.

The UK Government is issuing visas to Ukrainians with a named UK sponsor or host. This involves would-be sponsors or hosts matching themselves with Ukraine guests. This is not an easy process, said Mr Mann, and many hosts find it frustrating.

Several members of the audience are would-be hosts and spoke with passion about this frustration.

The meeting was organised by Wells Community Network. The audience included the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, and the Mayor. He is pictured with Dave Mann and Karen Deverell who chaired the meeting.
