Wells has a new Mayor!
We are delighted to announce that Cllr Louis Agabani became the 651st Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells on Saturday 10th May 2025.
Louis is unique in so many ways. Becoming our first black and our first Muslim Mayor, embracing the diversity that brings.
Louis is known to his family as Loaye and was born in Sudan. He arrived in this country aged 10 and speaking no English, Louis would travel the streets of London with a map of his home location in his pocket should he become lost.
He went on to achieve 3 ‘A’ levels and then to study Economics at the City of London Polytechnic. This is where he met his wife Pippa and they now share two children, Archie and Poppy.
Whilst studying, Louis would also be selling items on a market stall and working in night clubs. That entrepreneurial spirit continued with numerous successful businesses here in Wells, plus his contribution to the Wells Chamber of Commerce.
Louis' chosen charity is the Wells Skate park who are looking to strengthen Wells with a modern, inclusive skate park – designed by the community, for the community. A free, accessible space for all ages to build skills, confidence, resilience and friendships while staying active, creative and connected.
Throughout the year Louis will be accompanied by Mary-Ellen Nowell who has agreed to be his Mayoress, helping him out on his many mayoral duties.
We wish Louis well for his mayoral year. We know you will work hard and we look forward to seeing all that you achieve for the City of Wells and its residents.
